Surgery
Colic Surgery
Horses are especially prone to developing colic, or abdominal pain. Most causes of abdominal pain, such as gas, are not serious and will pass with time. But colic can be caused by a life-threatening condition, such as a malformation of the organs or a foreign object in the intestines. In these cases, it is essential that your horse undergoes surgery. Our doctors will be able to diagnose the cause of the colic and to determine if surgical treatment is necessary.
Wound Reconstructions
If your horse suffers a wound, we can provide a grafting or other reconstructive surgery to ensure it heals properly and doesn’t cause any future issues.
Fracture Repair
Although any horse can break a bone, performance horses are especially vulnerable to leg fractures. A horse with a fracture can suffer a severe amount of pain. Using screws and plates, we are able to realign the bone to heal back together, without it being necessary for your horse to keep the weight off of the fractured area.
Respiratory Tract Surgery
A respiratory tract issue can significantly affect your horse’s performance by inhibiting their ability to breathe and take in a sufficient amount of oxygen to reach the muscles. Respiratory tract surgery is the best way to cure any abnormalities in the respiratory tract.
Arthroscopy & Standing Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a surgery during which we can examine and then treat problems in the joint, including fractures, abnormalities and injuries. We can perform the surgery with the horse under general anesthesia, or with the horse sedated while standing.
Laparoscopy
A laparoscopy is a procedure in which we insert a small instrument with an attached camera through a small incision in the horse, and then complete a surgery through the incision. This procedure is used to treat a range of gastrointestinal, urinary tract and reproductive organ issues.
Laser
Using a diode laser, we can perform a range of minimally invasive surgeries for your horse’s comfort. When using a laser, generally the horse will not need anesthesia and will experience reduced side effects and have a shorter recovery time.
Cheek Tooth Removal
We perform a cheek tooth removal when a horse has a broken or severely decayed tooth, an abscess, or periodontitis. A cheek tooth is a horse’s molar.
Sinus Surgery
Sinus issues can cause pain and discomfort in a horse and can affect their ability to properly breathe. Sinus surgery can cause relief as well as improve your horse’s performance.
Laryngeal Surgery
Laryngeal surgery is used to treat laryngeal hemiplegia, which is a condition that paralyzes one half of the voice box. This condition makes it difficult for the horse to breathe properly, because one of the vocal folds then blocks the horse’s airway. In laryngeal surgery, we either tie back the fold so it can no longer obstruct the airway, or we remove the vocal cords altogether.
